Turf Removal Rebate

Lawns across California are being transformed into water-efficient oases as part of an effort to promote efficiency statewide.  Developing these stunning gardens will add dollars to your wallet and will conserve water.

As an added incentive, water agencies are offering rebates for lawns that are removed and replaced with drought tolerant plants and a permeable surface. In May, the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) increased their budget for turf removal rebates to a record breaking $450 million! As part of the increased budget, MWD also added new guidelines for residential applicants.

For residential applicants, the general guidelines are as follows:

  • Must be a minimum of 250 square feet
  • Must have existing turf that is alive or has gone brown
  • Must include some plants excluding turf in the project area unless artificial turf is used
  • Must be permeable to both air and water
  • Completed projects must not include any live turf or turf looking grasses
  • Concrete and other impermeable surface may invalidate rebate
  • Rebate is eligible for up to 3,000 square feet of turf removed or as much as $6,000
  • Customers are responsible for complying with all applicable laws, codes policies and restrictions

If you’re ready to make your garden an oasis, visit one of Central Basin’s five Demonstration Gardens for sample landscape designs that use drought tolerant plants native to the area.
