2015 Solar Cup

For the 13th consecutive year, Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) hosted Solar Cup, a seven month program where students build and race solar-powered boats.  As an MWD member agency, Central Basin sponsored three schools from the service area: John Glenn High School, Downey High School and Paramount High School.

Downey High School shined at this year’s Solar Cup, taking first place in the Veteran, Central and Bay Region 200 Meter Sprint Race, and the Public Service Message.  The team also placed second place in the endurance race.

Held at Skinner Lake in Temecula Valley, Solar Cup provides hands on experience in conservation, engineering and messaging with new and traditional media.  Each team builds 16-foot boats and equip them with steering, solar panels and motors.  As boats are being built, teams provide technical reports to showcase progress.  On the creative spectrum, teams provide artwork for the boats and create a public service message that raises awareness on water conservation. Teams then races boats in endurance and sprint tracks.

Central Basin congratulates all teams for their efforts and successes at this year’s Solar Cup!
