Saving Water, Gas & Energy, One Student at a Time
Central Basin partners with Southern California utilities to bring conservation
program to sixth-graders
Carson, CA- Central Basin Municipal Water District partnered with Southern California Edison and the Southern California Gas Company to offer the popular LivingWise Program to more than 28 middle school classrooms throughout Central Basin's service area.
Through this collaborative program, every participating student received a free LivingWise Resource Action Kit. Complete with a high-efficiency showerhead, kitchen and bathroom sink aerators, a compact fluorescent light bulb, nightlight, a Filtertone alarm and tools to monitor a home's water and energy use, these kits are simple, fun and effective in reducing a home's annual water, energy and gas consumption.
To maximize the educational experience for students, teachers also received supplemental classroom lesson plans that met state teaching standards. Guided by these classroom exercises, teachers introduced students to the concepts of conservation and environmental stewardship, focusing on Southern California's limited, precious resources of water, energy and gas.
As a result of this program, by the time many schools let out for summer vacation this June, more than 1,500 local sixth-graders will be inspired, and geared up, to beat the summer heat through conservation.
"The timing was perfect to bring the LivingWise Program to our schools," said Central Basin Board President Robert Apodaca. "Not only is water usage at its highest from June through September, but our state is facing one of the driest years on record. Now, our students have the information necessary to help their families conserve water, as well as our other, limited resources."
In total, the devices distributed through this program will conserve an estimated 810,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity annually for the region, 122,000 therms of gas and more than 26 million gallons of water—that's enough electricity, gas, and water to meet the needs of more than 400 homes for one year.
"The Central Basin LivingWise Program is more than just an educational program," said President Apodaca. "It creates lasting partnerships between the schools and the community while inspiring these students to become environmentally conscientious."
