Central Basin MWD Sets its Sights Under New Leadership
Art Aguilar Named as District's General Manager
Carson, CA - The Central Basin Municipal Water District Board of Directors has named Art Aguilar as the District's new General Manager. A native of the Central Basin area, Aguilar has served as the Co-General Manager of both the West Basin and Central Basin Municipal Water Districts for the past two years.
This action is the first step taken by the District to restructure the agency following West Basin's recent announcement to dissolve the joint management agreement with Central Basin. The Board's decision to align the future of the District under single leadership sets the stage to building a more efficient water agency that is responsive to its community and purveyors.
The immediate appointment stemmed from the Board's initiative to start redefining the mission and goals of the organization to ensure a smooth transition once the dissolution becomes effective July 1, 2006. Aguilar's contract is still being negotiated.
"During this time of change, we remain committed to serving our community, and this decision is an important part of our plans for the future," said Central Basin Board President Bob Apodaca.
"Although the decision to split the districts was not ours, we knew that in order to make this transition as cost-effective as possible, we needed to start making things happen," Apodaca continued. "Namely, putting a capable leader in our top office. We believe we've achieved that this week. Art Aguilar's background, experience and outstanding leadership skills make him a perfect fit for Central Basin."
Aguilar said that he is honored by the Board's selection and remains focused on maintaining the agency's strong community ties during this transition. "While there are still many issues to resolve before the official dissolution, I am confident in our ability to continue to provide the best possible service to our community members."
Aguilar joined the Central Basin and West Basin Municipal Water Districts in 1999, serving as the manager of the Public & Governmental Affairs Department. Under his management, areas such as public education, conservation outreach and public/media relations were refined and enhanced to become foundation stones of the department.
Aguilar came to the Districts after 30 years as a reporter, editor and publisher of community newspapers throughout Southern California. Over the course of his tenure, he has been honored both for his contribution to journalism and extensive community service. He has a B.S. degree in Business & Management from the University of Redlands.
