Local High School Earns a Big Check for Volunteering
Central Basin Municipal Water District presents Santa Fe High School with a check for $8,040.00
Carson - During its Monday Board meeting, Central Basin Municipal Water District's Board of Directors proudly presented Santa Fe High School with a check for $8,040.00 for their participation in the Ultra-Low-Flush (ULF) Toilet Distribution program. On October 11, 2003, students from the high school volunteered to help Central Basin distribute 536 free ultra-lowflush toilets to the residents of Santa Fe Springs. The school's Assistant Principal Mr. Harry Yessian, along with several students, accepted the check on behalf of the school.
Since 1995, Central Basin has worked with non-profit, community-based organizations and local high schools to promote conservation programs while helping them earn money for their assistance. These organizations receive $15 for each old "water-wasting" toilet that is returned for recycling.
Director Bob Apodaca, Central Basin Board President, explained, "These events have become popular in the communities and made significant monetary contributions to many of our local high schools. Our partnerships are truly a win-win' deal." The money raised is used for a variety of items ranging from purchasing team uniforms to funding school improvements.
The ULF Toilet distribution program was established to provide the public with free high- quality ULF Toilets that conserve water. These toilets are high-quality and save an average of 26 gallons of water per day which translate into savings of more than 5 million gallons annually. The programs are conducted annually throughout Central Basin's service area.
