Local Middle School Students Make a Connection with Conservation

Central Basin MWD Develops New Water and Energy-Efficiency Curriculum

Carson, CA - Central Basin, in partnership with the State of California Department of Water Resources, has developed a new curriculum for middle school students called "Conservation Connection" that will actively involve children in water and energy education. The program will be provided free of charge to all interested middle school teachers within the District's service area.

The in-classroom curriculum provides a 16-page handbook designed to teach students about California's water supply, focusing on the State's largest water users, the growing demand for water and ways to expand our current supply.

The program gives students a chance to practice what they've learned by completing a survey of their homes and schools and implementing plans to decrease water and energy use. The curriculum also comes with a 66-page teacher guide to assist students in their learning. Each of the 7 lessons is formatted with a lesson overview, a vocabulary section, materials and preparation, an approximate time requirement, and suggestions for other activities to extend the learning process.

In addition, "Conservation Connection" is correlated to meet numerous California State Content Standards in the areas of Science, Language Arts and Math. Central Basin is currently advertising the new curriculum to all middle school teachers within the District's service area. The program will be available to teachers in Fall 2004.

"Water Education is one of the most critical components of Central Basin's conservation efforts," said Central Basin Municipal Water District Board President Bob Apodaca. "Conservation Connection' provides a great opportunity to teach children about the importance of conserving water and energy in California."
