Central Basin’s statement regarding the California Public Utilities Commission’s Public Hearing on 12/5/11

On Monday December 5, the California Public Utilities Commission (PUC) held a public hearing in the City of Carson for Golden State Water Company ratepayers. The hearing was one of several being held statewide to investigate why customers of Golden State Water Company (a private sector company that services many communities across the state) are being subjected to paying some of the highest prices for water in California.

Residents from several Southern California cities, including from within the Central Basin service area, expressed vehement opposition to current and proposed future rate increases being imposed by Golden State.

Central Basin supports efforts by the PUC to investigate unexplained rate increases by private retailers, as well as their efforts to give local residents an opportunity to voice concerns and frustrations over the financial hardship these rate increases bring. While we are always concerned about this matter given that many of the impacted consumers come from cities and towns that are historically underserved communities comprised of working people who are disproportionately affected by such steep rate increases.

As the agency responsible for providing imported and recycled water to southeast Los Angeles County, Central Basin is proud to be able to provide high quality water at some of the lowest rates in the entire region.
