COMMERCE - The Central Basin Board of Directors presented former Central Basin Director George Cole with a Certificate of Recognition this month to commemorate his 24 years of outstanding service on the Bell City Council, and to honor him upon his retirement from the Council.

As a Councilmember, Director Cole served four terms as Mayor, demonstrating visionary leadership and commitment through his involvement in public safety, community well-being and education.

"There is no question that George has had a tremendous impact on our community," said Central Basin Board President Robert Apodaca. "The programs and partnerships he spearheaded have not only improved the health and welfare of the City, but also of the greater Southeast Los Angeles Community."

In the area of education, Director Cole assisted in bringing together local parents and school officials to reduce student dropout rates. He also played a key role in creating a teen counseling center, along with other youth programs.

Director Cole also brought attention to senior citizen issues in the community, assisting in the development of Bell’s first senior living complexes.

Director Cole announced his retirement from the Bell City Council on October 7, 2008.
