Bell Gardens: The First California Friendly City
About the Project
Central Basin has partnered with the City of Bell Gardens and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) to transform the City of Bell Gardens into the first California Friendly® City, creating a program model for communities throughout the Southland to adopt comprehensive, citywide conservation measures.
In 2006, Central Basin was awarded grant funding from MWD to begin this visionary project. Over the next two years, the city will receive more than $100,000 to integrate key water-saving measures at the city's public parks and facilities.
The conservation measures to be adopted by the city will include the installation of synthetic turf at one of the city's premier soccer fields; 50,000 square feet of California native landscaping; a wireless valve controller system to irrigate various sites throughout the City's 122-acre parkland; and the installation of waterless urinals and high-efficiency toilets throughout public facilities.
As a second phase to the project, the community will be encouraged to adopt conservation water measures as a “way of life” in their own homes.
