Local Schools Make their Mark at Solar Cup 2011

Warren High School

Local students achieved great success at this year’s Solar Cup!

Four schools from the Central Basin service area competed this year and did extraordinarily well in the annual Solar Cup competition. Norwalk High School beat out 39 other teams to win Hottest Boat Award, Warren High School (pictured above and featured in the Downey Patriot) was another big winner, taking 1st place for having the best PSA and 2nd place in the Endurance Race. Paramount High School built the fastest boast in their division and  Huntington Park High School distinguished themselves in the rookie division. From all of us at Central Basin, a big congrats to all the students and teachers who participated, you did a great job!

Each year, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California hosts the Solar Cup Competition to encourage high school students to work together to build and race solar-powered boats. Held at Lake Skinner, this exciting weekend event is a lesson in the importance of solar power, hardwork and teamwork. Check out this NewsHawk article or  Metropolitan’s Press Release to find out who else won at this year’s Solar Cup.

Central Basin was excited to be able to sponsor four teams–a record for the District!–and we are very proud of the students who participated. We look forward to working with our local schools for Solar Cup 2012!

The Sun is an abundant source of energy. Today with the help of cutting edge photo-volatic technology it is possible to harness more of this energy than ever before. This is made possible by Solar panels that convert the sun’s energy into electricity. With the growing enquiries for solar on boats, Caregreen Sussex has been established to cover the Sussex and surrounding Areas.
