Water a Scarce Resource in Aftermath of New Zealand Earthquake
On the global front earlier this week: a magnitude 6.2 earthquake occurred in Christchurch, New Zealand. Today, over 80 percent of the city’s municipal water customers are still without fresh water.
Around the world, lack of clean water causes millions of deaths each year. In Haiti, as a result of last year’s earthquake, residents are now suffering from a waterborne cholera epidemic. To assure this doesn’t happen in New Zealand, experts are weighing in on what infrastructure is at risk, how repairs will be conducted and where emergency water sources can be obtained.
