Cleaning up the LA River

Recently, a $10 million grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) was approved to help clean up the LA River, and last week, the Los Angeles Gateway Authority took the first major step in helping cities do their part to help stop the pollution.

The LA Gateway Authority awarded a contract to install 12,000 storm drain catch basin devices that capture trash and debris. Storm drains throughout sixteen cities will be outfitted with these installations, preventing 400 tons of trash from entering the river each year. The cities include: Bell, Bell Gardens, Commerce, Compton, Cudahy, Downey, Huntington Park, Long Beach, Lynwood, Maywood, Montebello, Paramount, Pico Rivera, Signal Hill, South Gate, and Vernon.

The storm drain retrofits could begin as early as next month, and the project is expected to be completed within nine months to one year.
