Last weekend, KPCC (89.3 FM) looked at the outdoor water-saving efforts of our fellow Southern Californians. Considering that the typical Southern California residence uses up to 70 percent of its water outside the home, this was an important piece that hopefully inspired listeners to join the “Drought Crusade” by rethinking how they could save water while managing their yards. Need some landscaping inspiration? Take a look at some of these impressive drought-tolerant gardens, sent in by KPCC listeners who save water daily (and effortlessly) with California Friendly landscapes.

Ah, those SoCal homesteads… good memories. Loved seeing the yard (in the link) using urbanite for retaining walls!

I became a permaculture designer a couple of years back; currently I’m really enjoying being a member of a cohousing group up here in Oakland (annual rainfall 14 to 28 inches). We’ve been capturing rainwater for a while (on the order of 800 gallons per season). We’re about to embark on creating a greywater system, so we can water our fruit trees with shower/bath/laundry water.

I strongly feel there’s enough water around, we just have to get much, much smarter about how we use it.

How supprise to me! 70% wasting could cost a lot. Thinking about the envirnments of weather and economy, we californian should do something smart. That will be the way for us to save both money and life.
