Local Sixth-Grader Shines Creativity and Water Awareness in Regional Poster Contest

Stephanie Haro receives Apple MacBook for most outstanding poster in "Water is Life" poster contest

Commerce, CA - Central Basin Municipal Water District proudly awarded Stephanie Haro, a sixth-grader from Lake Marie Elementary School in the City of Whittier, with an Apple MacBook computer for her outstanding entry in the regional "Water is Life" Poster Contest.

Stephanie's water conservation poster, a detailed and colorful collage depicting the vital role of water in our world, was selected for its creativity, artistic ability and for its powerful conservation message. Chosen over dozens of entries from schools throughout Central Basin's 24-city service area, her poster will now be featured in Metropolitan Water District's 2009 annual "Water is Life" calendar.

"We are pleased to be able to honor the young talent of our community through these regional programs, "said Central Basin Board President Robert Apodaca. "We hope Stephanie can put this MacBook to good use further developing her artistic and academic talents."

Central Basin sponsors the "Water is Life" poster contest annually in partnership with the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, during Water Awareness Month in May. The contest is open to all elementary and middle schools throughout the Central Basin service area. Students are encouraged to depict the value of water and highlight examples of conservation and wise water use. This year, Central Basin received 75+ poster entries.

Winners from each of Metropolitan's 26 member agencies are featured in a "Water is Life" calendar.
